About 5,000 people are believed to be missing in two areas of the Indonesian city of Palu, which was affected by a severe earthquake and a subsequent tsunami just over a week ago, according to Indonesian authorities.

Indonesia's disaster authority refers to estimates from local leaders in the Balaroa and Petobo neighborhoods, which are the hardest hit areas. However, the number of missing is difficult to confirm, as large areas are still buried under huge amounts of mud and rubble.

So far, more than 1,700 people have been confirmed to be have killed as a direct consequence of the earthquake and the tsunami.
