iPad suspected in fire that destroyed NY fire station apparatus - forces temporary relocation

A New York fire department has been forced to relocate operations after a blaze inside its station destroyed a fire engine and heavily damaged the building, with investigators now examining whether a charging iPad may have sparked the fire.

The incident occurred early Sunday May 31 at the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department in Queens, where crews discovered smoke and flames coming from the apparatus bay. Firefighters arriving from neighboring companies found the department’s primary engine fully involved, with heat and smoke spreading through the station.

Officials said the fire appears to have originated near a charging tablet device, believed to be an iPad used for dispatching and digital run sheets. Investigators are looking into whether a battery failure or charging malfunction ignited nearby equipment.

The fire destroyed the department’s main engine and caused significant structural damage, forcing volunteers to temporarily relocate their operations to a nearby facility. No injuries were reported.

Local officials said the loss of the apparatus will impact response capacity until a replacement can be secured. The cause remains under investigation by fire marshals, who are reviewing electrical components and charging equipment recovered from the scene.
