OTTAWA — A new Canadian study has found that migraine‑related hospital visits rise sharply during periods of wildfire smoke, underscoring the growing health toll of worsening fire seasons.
Researchers from Health Canada analyzed nearly one million emergency visits for migraine and severe headache conditions in Alberta and Ontario between 2010 and 2023. They discovered a 6 per cent increase in hospital trips linked to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) from wildfires — particles roughly 30 times thinner than a human hair.
