Fire in charging EV spread into a multiple car fire

en

A fire broke out at an EV charging station in the parking lot of a Target store on Business Park Drive in  northern San Diego County. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on September 6, quickly escalated as flames spread from one electric vehicle to at least two others nearby.

Firefighters from the Vista Fire Department responded  to the scene, where they found multiple electric vehicles engulfed in flames. According to officials, the blaze appears to have originated while one EV was actively charging. The fire’s rapid spread highlights the volatile nature of lithium-ion batteries, which are known to pose unique challenges during thermal runaway events.

Hazmat teams were also dispatched to manage the cleanup and disposal of hazardous materials linked to the burning batteries. Lithium-ion fires not only burn intensely but can release toxic fumes and require specialized containment strategies.

No injuries were reported, but the incident has reignited concerns about the safety of public charging infrastructure and the protocols in place to prevent cascading fires. With EV adoption on the rise, fire departments across the country are grappling with how to adapt their response tactics to this new class of vehicle emergencies.

This event follows a string of similar incidents nationwide, including fires at parking garages, ferry decks, and shipping ports, prompting calls for updated safety standards and better public awareness.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the Vista charging station remains closed pending inspection and cleanup.
