Swedish Firefighter Jörgen Coursell started pole dancing at the age of 51 and initially faced mocking comments. Instead of being discouraged, he was inspired to share his progress on social media.
“It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life, and I’m not going to stop,” he says.
Jörgen began training after an invitation from a friend and now practices at least three times a week, as first reported by Swedish daily paper Norrköpings Tidningar. Despite receiving negative remarks early on, he has continued to share his journey and now receives mostly positive feedback.
Jörgen sees pole dancing as a challenge, performing moves he never thought possible, such as lifting himself into various poses:
"Being mocked has motivated me to post even more on social media and show those guys what I’m capable of," he says to the newspaper.
Dancing improved his health
The training has also significantly improved Jörgen Coursell’s health. The back and neck issues he previously suffered from are now gone.
“It requires strength and body coordination to do this.”
Has a pole at home and at the station to practice
He enjoys showcasing his skills and hopes more people his age will dare to try pole dancing. In addition to training in the city of Norrköping, he also has a pole at home and one at the fire station where he works.
Despite being one of the few men over 50 participating in pole dancing, Jörgen has never felt alone in the sport.
“I was a bit worried about that before I started, but it’s a very inclusive sport, and I felt welcome from day one,” he says.
