Three firefighters killed as extreme heat and high winds drive deadly wildfires across Greece and Crete

en

Three firefighters have been killed in Crete and mainland Greece as extreme heat and high winds drive a wave of dangerous wildfires across Europe, according to multiple verified news sources.

The Greek fire department confirmed that two firefighters died on the island of Crete, near Krya Vrysi, after becoming trapped between fire fronts. A third firefighter was killed in a separate wildfire on the Peloponnese mainland.

The fires are part of a wider arc of severe blazes stretching from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean, intensified by repeated heatwaves, drought, and strong winds. Experts warn that these conditions are making fires harder to control and more likely to restart, even in areas previously stabilized.

Wider European wildfire situation

  • France: Firefighters kept a major Gironde blaze stable overnight, but temperatures of 38–41°C and dry winds threaten new flare‑ups.
  • Spain: The country is battling multiple large fires; one near Madrid reached “operational level 3”, the highest emergency classification in Spanish history.
  • Turkey: New fires have prompted evacuations and road closures.

 Why conditions are so dangerous

Europe is experiencing one of its most intense wildfire seasons on record. Meteorologists and fire commanders cite:

  • Repeated heatwaves
  • Record temperatures (up to 40°C in Spain and France)
  • Strong, erratic winds
  • Extreme drought and fuel‑loaded forests

These factors combine to create fires that spread rapidly, overwhelm ground crews, and threaten towns, tourist areas, and critical infrastructure.
