A woman in Groveton, Texas was seriously injured early Tuesday morning after attempting to light a cigarette while using supplemental oxygen, resulting in an explosion inside her apartment.
According to Trinity County Sheriff Woody A. Wallace, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. at the Senior Apartments in Groveton. First responders arrived quickly and the woman was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Sheriff Wallace issued a public safety warning following the explosion, emphasizing the extreme danger of smoking near oxygen tanks or hoses.
“Over the years, we have responded to several incidents involving people smoking while on oxygen, and unfortunately, these situations almost always end badly,” he said.
He urged families to educate loved ones about the risks and prevent open flames near oxygen equipment.
The explosion is under investigation, but authorities believe the ignition of oxygen vapours caused the blast.
