What happens to disaster preparedness solutions once a project ends?
Across Europe, hundreds of tools, platforms, methodologies and datasets are developed to strengthen disaster resilience. Yet many become difficult to find, maintain or reuse once project funding comes to an end.
To help address this challenge, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published CWA 18390:2026 – Guidelines for Disaster Risk Preparedness Solutions.
Access the document:
The document provides practical recommendations on how preparedness solutions can be:
- Better documented
- Easier to discover and compare
- More interoperable
- Sustainably maintained beyond project lifetimes
Developed by experts from across the European Disaster Resilience community, the CWA represents a collective effort to reduce fragmentation and maximise the long-term value of investments in preparedness and resilience.
The guidance is intended for research and innovation projects, civil protection authorities, emergency services, practitioners, policymakers, funding bodies and organisations responsible for maintaining preparedness-related tools, platforms and processes.
The DIREKTION project is proud to have contributed to this important initiative alongside numerous European projects, practitioners and organisations.
DIREKTION would like to thank UNI – Ente Italiano di Normazione, the SYNERGIES and PARATUS projects, CMINE – The Crisis Management Innovation Network, and all contributors involved in the development of this CWA.
