Historical events: The 1967 Martelange truck explosion killed 22 people in Belgium

This month we remember an accident that happened the 21st of August 1967 in the small Belgian bordertown of Martelange. 22 people died and 59 were injured after a gas truck lost control downhill in high speed.

The breaks did not work and the vehicle hit a bridge in the town center and immediately exploded. Luxembourg firefighters, being the nearest station to the accident scene, were first on scene shortly followed by their Belgian colleagues. This cross border cooperation worked well despite the European union not existing yet.

Unfortunately these types of accident still occurs to this day, which is why CTIF continues tirelessly to work for safer citizens through skilled firefighters!
