At least 50 people have been killed in an explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran, according to state media reports cited by Reuters.
The explosion is believed to have been caused by a methane gas leak in a coal mine in Tabas, approximately 500 kilometres southeast of the capital, Tehran, according to the Associated Press (AP).
At least 50 people have died, and 20 or more have been injured in the explosion. Several miners are still believed to be trapped underground.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the site, and around 70 people are working to assist those in need at the mine.
The explosion occurred in two sections of the mine in Tabas, 540 km (335 miles) southeast of Tehran.
According to state media, the blast happened at 21:00 local time (17:30 GMT) on Saturday.
The number of survivors trapped inside the mine remains uncertain. State media has since updated the initial death toll of 30.
"The number of dead workers has risen to 51, and the number of injured has increased to 20," the official IRNA news agency reported.
South Khorasan's governor, Javad Ghenaatzadeh, stated that 69 workers were in the affected sections at the time of the incident. Speaking to the AP news agency, he said, "An explosion took place, and unfortunately, 69 people were working in the B and C blocks of the Madanjoo mine."
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that all efforts will be made to assist the victims and their families. He also announced that an investigation into the accident will be launched.
