The members of the CTIF Fire Prevention Commission met from 24–26 September 2025 in Gornja
Radgona and Radenci, Slovenia, marking the reestablishment of this important CTIF body after a
considerable break.
The meeting opened in Gornja Radgona, where Martin Nekula, Vice President of CTIF, and Tadej
Šinkovec warmly welcomed all participants. They recalled key milestones in the history of the
Commission and expressed their gratitude that this vital group is once again active. Martin also
thanked all attending members and the Slovenian colleagues for organizing the event.
Following a roll call, representatives from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Finland, and
Lithuania took part in person, while members from Estonia joined online.
The agenda featured several presentations addressing current fire prevention challenges and
initiatives.
Martin Nekula (Czech Republic) introduced the Fire Rescue Brigade of the Moravian-Silesian Region, presenting its structure, activities, and upcoming projects, including a new fire station, a laboratory project, and a future firefighting museum.
Finian Joyce (Ireland, guest, online) presented the Smoke Alarm Days Project, highlighting the 2025 campaign and inviting CTIF members to participate in promoting smoke alarm awareness across Europe.
Petr Kučera (Czech Republic) delivered a presentation on Fire Safety Engineering in the Czech Republic, focusing on the use of fire modelling and expert assessments in building design and safety evaluations.
Irma Meškauskaitė (Lithuania) spoke about Fire Prevention in Lithuania, outlining the national fire safety strategy and its effectiveness in improving prevention outcomes.
Michal Valouch (Czech Republic) presented an overview of the Fire Prevention System in the Czech Republic, covering State Fire Supervision, Building Fire Prevention, Fire Inspections, and Fire Investigations. He also suggested topics for further work, including the European Green Deal, photovoltaic systems, electromobility, and high-rise & timber buildings.
A discussion followed on the comparability of fire prevention data among member countries.
Participants shared examples from national practice and agreed that more harmonized data systems
would benefit both professional use and international comparison.
The session was honored by the presence of Janko Cerkvenik, President of the Firefighters
Association of Slovenia, who greeted the participants and wished them a productive and successful
meeting.
As the meeting coincided with the 10th International Fair of Defence, Security, Protection and Rescue(SOBRA), participants visited the fair in the afternoon and attended a live demonstration of the Fire Prevention Truck, presented by Tadej Šinkovec.
The second day of the meeting took place in Radenci, Slovenia. It began with presentations by
Vasiliki Georgountzou and Ioannis Tsapouras from the Hellenic Fire Service (Greece), followed by
Lauri Holappa (Finland), who introduced the self-assessment concept for fire safety in detached and
small residential buildings.
Aleš Jug elected chair again after a long break
Afterwards, Martin Nekula (Czech Republic) led the elections for the Chair of the Fire Prevention Commission. Members unanimously elected ddr. Aleš Jug (Slovenia) as the new Chair for the upcoming term. His appointment will be submitted to the CTIF Executive Committee for formal approval.
Dr. Jug has led this commission before, and we welcome him back to CTIF.
In his remarks, Aleš Jug expressed his intention to strengthen cooperation and re-engage former members of the Commission.
Following a short coffee break, Aleš Jug presented the latest results from fire testing of photovoltaic systems, carried out at the Fire Laboratory of the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on the Action Plan for 2025–2030, during which members
shared their priorities and agreed on key focus areas for the coming years. Participants emphasized
the importance of continued international collaboration to enhance fire prevention and safety across
Europe.
Next physical meeting in October 2026
The next in-person meeting of the Commission will take place during October 2026 (location to be
confirmed). An online meeting will also be held earlier (April 2026) to follow up on the agreed action
points.
With this, the two-day meeting successfully concluded, setting a clear direction for the Commission’s
work and cooperation in the years ahead.
