Hydrocarbon leak during maintenance activities caused large fire at refinery

A public health advisory remains in effect for Martinez, parts of Pacheco, and Clyde following a fire at the Martinez Refining Company on January 31, 2025. 

The fire, which started around 1:40 p.m. due to a hydrocarbon leak during maintenance activities, sent massive flames and thick black smoke billowing from the facility. Firefighters managed to contain the fire, which was mostly extinguished by 11 a.m. the following day.

The incident occurred at the Martinez Refining Company in Martinez, California

Contra Costa Health officials have urged residents with respiratory sensitivities to stay indoors and keep windows closed as smoke from the fire clears. Six people were injured in the incident, with four taken to the hospital and three treated at the scene. 

The shelter-in-place order was lifted later that evening, but concerns about air quality persist.

The Martinez Refining Company, owned by PBF Energy, has been under scrutiny for maintenance issues and emission problems in the past. 

he incident has prompted calls for more transparency and better communication with residents during such emergencies.
