The 2026 CTIF Competitions in Berlin cancelled due to funding issues

The planned 2026 CTIF Competitions in Berlin have been cancelled. See the letter from our German National CTIF Committee below. The CTIF Executive Committee is working on a solution and will communicate as soon as we have a new plan.

Internationale Feuerwehrwettbewerbe 2026 in Berlin

Dear Mr. President,
Together with the Berlin Fire Brigade, Germany's largest and oldest professional fire brigade,
we had planned to host the 18th International Firefighting Competitions and the 25th
International Youth Firefighting Meeting in Berlin in 2026, the brigade's anniversary year. 

The International Firefighting Competitions of the World Firefighting Association CTIF are a
spectacular major event with around 3,500 participants from over 30 countries and more than
10,000 spectators. This major international sporting event, which takes place only every four
years worldwide, impressively demonstrates that our firefighters do much more than just
provide conventional assistance in emergencies. For years, both young and adult firefighters
prepare for this competition, in which they demonstrate their peak performance in a wide
variety of firefighting sports disciplines.
 

Following our application, the CTIF Delegates' Assembly awarded the contract to Germany
on 20 June 2024 in Oslo (Norway). We were very pleased about this and gladly accepted the
great challenge.
 

Of course, the event is an organisational and financial challenge. We currently estimate the
total costs to be at least €3 million, which could be significantly exceeded due to price
increases and a wide variety of other factors.
 

However, after long and intensive consideration, we have now had to decide not to hold the
event.

It is not possible to secure reliable and adequate funding for the entire event. Germany and
the German federal states are currently experiencing challenging times. Political, social and
economic conditions are changing rapidly. Elections to the German Bundestag, various state
parliaments and the proclaimed ‘turning point’ make it difficult to implement additional
programmes. This is also at a time of increasing national and international threats, a global
political situation with wars and conflicts, but also the increasingly severe and mitigating
consequences of climate change.
 

I would like to refer explicitly to the discussions that have already taken place.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and all those responsible at CTIF for the trust
you have placed in us and your support to date.

Sehr geehrter Herr Präsident,
zusammen mit der Berliner Feuerwehr, der größten und ältesten Berufsfeuerwehr
Deutschlands, hatten wir die Absicht, in deren Jubiläumsjahr 2026 die 18. Internationalen
Feuerwehrwettbewerbe und die 25. Internationale Jugendfeuerwehrbegegnung in Berlin zu
veranstalten. Die Internationalen Feuerwehrwettbewerbe des Weltfeuerwehrverbandes CTIF
sind eine spektakuläre Großveranstaltung mit etwa 3.500 Teilnehmenden aus über 30
Ländern und mehr als 10.000 Zuschauern. Dieses internationale Großsportevent, das
weltweit nur alle vier Jahre stattfindet, demonstriert eindrucksvoll, dass unsere
Feuerwehrleute weit mehr leisten als die herkömmliche Tätigkeit als Helferinnen und Helfer
in der Not. Über Jahre hinweg bereiten sich sowohl die jugendlichen als auch die
erwachsenen Feuerwehrangehörigen auf diesen Wettkampf vor, bei dem sie ihre
Höchstleistungen in verschiedensten Feuerwehrsportdisziplinen unter Beweis stellen.
Auf unsere entsprechende Bewerbung hin, hat die Delegiertenversammlung des CTIF am
20. Juni 2024 in Oslo (Norwegen) den Zuschlag für Deutschland erteilt. Darüber haben wir
uns sehr gefreut und die große Herausforderung gerne angenommen.
Natürlich ist die Veranstaltung eine organisatorische und finanzielle Herausforderung. Wir
gehen aktuell von Gesamtkosten in Höhe von mindestens 3 Mio. € aus, die aufgrund von
Preissteigerungen und unterschiedlichsten Rahmenbedingungen noch deutlich überschritten
werden könnten.

Wir haben uns nun aber nach langer und intensiver Prüfung entscheiden müssen, die
Veranstaltung nicht durchzuführen.
Eine verlässliche und auskömmliche Finanzierung der Gesamtveranstaltung ist nicht
möglich. Deutschland und auch die deutschen Bundesländer erleben aktuell
herausfordernde Zeiten. Politische, gesellschaftliche und auch wirtschaftliche
Rahmenbedingungen verändern sich rasant. Wahlen zum Deutschen Bundestag, zu
verschiedenen Länderparlamenten und auch die ausgerufene „Zeitenwende“ erschweren die
Durchführung zusätzlicher Angebote. Dies auch in einer Zeit zunehmender nationaler und
internationaler Bedrohungslagen, einer weltpolitischen Lage mit Kriegen und Konflikten, aber
auch durch die immer heftigeren und abzufedernden Folgen des Klimawandels.
Auf die bereits geführten Gespräche möchte ich mich ausdrücklich beziehen.

entgegenbrachte Vertrauen und die bisherige Unterstützung.
